Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. -Harold Whitman

{perseverance}

Since I started this journey to optimal health I have been pretty focused.  I've strayed a few times but have been able to retrain my brain to jump right back on plan.  In the past when I was on a diet (my program isn't a diet) and 'screwed up' I would do one of two things; not eat the rest of the day or I would say "oh well, I'll start again tomorrow" and then eat whatever I wanted the rest of the day.  Both of these approaches are counter productive and not physically or mentally healthy.

I don't know if it was a little bit of 'plan fatigue,' working for so long towards a goal that I wanted to have a break or what, but last weekend I made the decision to go off plan all weekend.  I ate and drank whatever I wanted all weekend, and it was mostly junk.

BOY WAS THAT A BAD IDEA!!!

Here is a list of what I noticed:
1. I no longer felt I had control over myself.
2. I was ravenous all the time.
3. My stomach hurt.
4. I was irritable.
5. I slept poorly and was very hot during the night.
6. I woke up tired.
7. I gained 8 pounds.
8. I was very bloated, my rings and flip flops left imprints in my skin.
9. I was sad I did it.
10. It wasn't worth it.
11. I was more motivated than ever to get back on plan (and stay there).

When I started I made a commitment to myself that I would be in this for life.  This is a journey NOT a destination, and there will be peaks and valleys and hardships and triumphs, and every time I fall I will get right back up and move forward.

{The Idea of Perfection}

The Nester posted this video this morning.  Wow Wow Wow!  Mr. Glass is talking about Storytelling but what he is saying could be applied to any creative work.  The important thing is to GET STARTED and to do a large volume of work.  Most importantly he says that at first your work will not be very good, but don't give up, push through to greatness!

{31 DSP - Day 4.2 - Organizing Books)

One of the things I needed to do today to put the guest room back together was to get the books back in the bookcase.  I've never organized my books in any kind of order.  I kind of know what is there and can usually find what I'm looking for at a glance.  A month or so ago I saw some bookcases on pinterest that were organized by color....

I was unable to find the original source.

SWOON!

So I decided to arrange my books the same way.  I figured if I hated it I can always change it.  :)

LOVE IT!
LOVE IT!
LOVE IT!

I look at it and I immediately smile and feel calmer.  I actually am able to find books faster this way!  Is that totally crazy?  My brain must just work in color.  I am so glad that I took the leap and did it!

I'm adding this to my 31 DSP because...well let's face it...those books could have sat on the floor for weeks!

10/5/2011 Update:  I think Nester and I were separated at birth...or that she is the big sister I never had (although she could very well be younger than me).  She always talks about making your home what YOU want it to be and not to be afraid to take risks doing things other people say you 'can't do' in your home (hello painted wood, stone, nail holes!).  She has helped me so much to over come the design limitations that others (but mostly myself) put on me.

Today she has a post where she talks again about doing things in our home to make US happy, regardless if anyone else likes them.  That hit me because when I was looking through someone's ELSES pinterest boards I came across one of my beloved 'books organized by color' pictures.  This is a board where she posts things she doesn't like.  You know what?  When I first saw her pin my first thought was "Well I shouldn't do that I guess."  Then I thought of Nester and smacked myself.  This woman (pinner) doesn't even know me, she will NEVER be at my house, and even if she did why should I care?  I love it (and Ben doesn't care) and that is all that matters.  So DO things in your home to make YOU happy!

[clarity]

"More important than the quest for certainty is the quest for clarity." -Francois Gautier

i think this applies to every woman, we all crave clarity.  to know our purpose, our mission, our role.  i don't need to know where things are going, the grand design or the plan, i  just need to know what i am supposed to be doing.  i feel most lost and touchy and snappy when i don't know what i am supposed to be doing.

i also don't like it when i attend multitudes of appts and events for my kids but they can't go to one eye doctor appt without pitching a royal fit, because i need to get new glasses that aren't scratched and giving me an eye strain headache and they owe me one . . . since their impatient whining led to the damage of the glasses in the first place.

ok so that second paragraph isn't inspiring, but it does make me think a lot, how i am ready to be able to put myself first while they are at school. how i am yearning for it despite not admitting it aloud.  how i am ready for them to be more responsible and selfless, they are only 6 and 4.5, and we are on our first non-vacation day, but it was hurtful all the same.

[empty, the good kind]

The above video is a promotion for the book but I loved the concepts highlighted in the video, and that style of video.

I found the video in this article which was pretty awesome.  Especially this line "The creative process is a daily assault on the beachhead of apathy."  I could easily substitute inertia for apathy.

[folly]

“On a deeper level you are already complete. When you realize that, there is a playful, joyous energy behind what you do.” -Eckhart Tolle

a friend of mine had this written on her facebook wall by her sister-in-law "it is folly to assume my awesome lies dormant." as a photographer i see it all the time.  photogs scrambling to submit to endless contests or shell out over and over for workshops, hoping to prove something or find something. . .hoping to hear "you are awesome."

as moms and women, we do the same thing, we are waiting, for this stressful situation to pass, or until this room is put together, then we'll rock it, then we'll be awesome. . .because we'll be there, not here.  there we can be awesome, here is just not ready, it's prepping for awesome.

but we've already got it, it's all right here.  we don't need 31 days to anything, or that approval from a friend or family member, our awesome is right there, all along.
